At Pawsitively Clean, we love our pets. We love their playfulness and the way they just seem to understand us—we even love the attitudes they sometimes have. At the end of the day, it all adds up into a pretty cute bundle we’re happy to play or snuggle with at night. From cute kittens to senior dogs and every pet in-between, we think they are an important part of our family life.

The part of having a pet that we want to make easier is the cleaning. We know that more people would adopt a pet if it were easier to keep the house clean, and that’s important to us. We have some tips below on how to keep the house clean with dogs and cats. With the right routine, you can keep your home clean and fresh, even with pets!

Maintain the Deep Clean with Regular Vacuuming and Spot Treatments

Vacuum Carpets Often

After you deep clean your carpets with the Pawsitively Clean carpet cleaner, maintain keeping the house clean by vacuuming regularly. Depending on how many pets you have, you may want to vacuum once or twice a week to keep pet hair from getting embedded into the carpet fibers. Make sure you vacuum in different directions to get the most hair out of the carpet.

Use your vacuum attachments! It’s easy to forget about the attachments, but they will help get pet hair out of many places, like sofa cushions, stair treads, behind furniture and more!

Clean up Pet Stains and Messes with Spot Treatments

As we all know, accidents happen with pets in the home. It’s just a part of life. It’s important to remove pet stains from carpet as soon as they happen, or as soon as you notice them. To do that, keep supplies on hand to clean up the accidents easily. For urine and feces, we recommend using Enzyme Action Plus stain odor eliminator. Not sure how to clean up the stains? Check out our articles on how to remove dried urine stains, how to remove fresh urine stains, and how to remove feces stains.

Getting Rid of Pet Odor

One of the things pet owners always wonder is: “does my home smell like my pet?” You can combat pet smells and odors by cleaning soft surfaces in your home regularly. Some soft surfaces may include:
  • Carpets
  • Throw blankets
  • Pillows
  • Curtains
  • Chairs
  • Other upholstered and fabric furniture
All of these surfaces easily absorb smells – and pets love rubbing up against and laying on these items, too! In addition to adding upholstery in your cleaning routine, regular vacuuming and deep carpet cleaning will help keep the pet smell under control. It’s also good to keep a cleaning spray on hand that is an odor eliminator, like our Pro Stain & Odor Eliminator, to tackle tough pet odors.

Sweeping and mopping hard floors in the home where pet dander may land is also a trick to keep pet odor under control. Pet dander and hair contribute to odor, so removing them where they collect is key to odor control!

Routine cleaning is a great way to keep the odor from pets in control. Although, lighting a candle or having some essential oils diffusing is always a good way to help if guests are on their way, too!

A Clean Pet Equals a Clean Home

Your home is only ever as clean as your pets. It is important to keep pets clean and establish a hygiene routine, plus less dirt and debris is tracked into the house. Here are some tips to keeping your pet clean, so your home stays clean:

Get Dogs Used to Bath Time

Dogs need to be bathed every once in a while to keep their skin and coat healthy. But there’s a line because they shouldn’t be over-bathed because it will strip natural oils from their skin. Many experts say every four-to-six weeks is a good time to bathe dogs but, if they get really dirty, then baths may need to be more frequent. Starting to bathe dogs when they are young will help them get used to the process so it’s not as big of an ordeal when they get to be older.

Wash Pet Bedding

Washing the dog bed and the cat bed can be a pain. You probably don’t wash them as often as you do your own bedding, but you should wash pet bedding regularly because it will help in keeping the house clean. Pet beds collect hair and dander and end up smelling a little worse than you’d probably like. One tip to wash them less often but to keep them clean is to try putting a blanket over them. That will be easier for you to toss in the washing machine compared to washing the dog bed or the cat bed.

Wipe Down Pet Paws

One of the ways that carpets get dirty is when dirt, sand, and snow comes in from the outside. We can take off our shoes at the door, but dogs (and some cats!) don’t have that luxury. Keep a designated pet paw towel by the door so that when pets come inside, you can easily wipe their paws before they get dirt all over the house.

Organize Pet Toys

Another way to keep your house clean is to find a basket or designated spot for pet toys and clean up every few days. Pets don’t know how to put away toys, so we have to keep up on it for them. Plus, you wouldn’t want to have a guest trip on a toy or to accidentally step on one yourself in the middle of the night!

Keeping your house clean with pets can sound like a lot of work, but as you work these tips into your regular cleaning routine, we hope that you won’t find them hard to do. Your home and your pets will thank you!
